FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between Jam and Jelly?

The difference between jam and jelly is that jelly is made strictly from the juice of fruit while jam is made from crushed fruit.  Specifically, jelly is made by crushing fruit, then straining out everything but the juice.  The juice is then boiled, typically with sugar and pectin, the latter of which reacts with the sugar and heat to give the jelly a thicker consistency for spreading.

What is Apple Butter?

Apple Butter is a form of jam made from apples, very smooth, creamy and really tasty. You can spread it on toast, eat it with pancakes, wrap it in crepes.  It is produced by the long, slow cooking of apples with cider or water to a point where the sugar in the apples caramelizes, turning the apple butter a deep brown. It can also be made with peaches, pears and pumpkins.

What is the ingredient Pectin?

Pectin is an indigestible natural carbohydrate (fiber). It is found in the cell walls of most fruit. When heated with sugar in water, it gels, giving jam and jellies their thickness.
